AUSTIN (KXAN) — The news that the Travis County District Legal professional will fall all prices against the two youngsters formerly in custody for the mass shooting in downtown Austin is not sitting down properly with the household of the man killed in the crossfire.
Nick Kantor, whose brother Douglas Kantor died just after the June 12 incident on Sixth Road, explained he has minimal faith in DA José Garza — and thinks the investigation is heading in the completely wrong way.
“Basically, what I took absent from the press meeting was that they are not prosecuting violent criminals any longer,” Kantor explained. “Nothing we can do now is likely to bring my brother back again. And which is a thing we have to take and grieve in our own way. But moving forward, we never want to see extra folks likely through what we are heading by means of.”
The Austin Police Section has spent the previous week and a 50 percent interviewing new witnesses and combing through online video and ballistic proof. It’s what led them to their sole suspect, 19-year-outdated De’ondre Jermirris White, of Killeen, a gentleman they say is a fugitive and who is likely nonetheless armed.
Interim Law enforcement Chief Joseph Chacon reported proof shows the two former teenage suspects also pulled out guns that night time. On the other hand, not enough evidence exists to establish they actually fired the weapons.
Douglas Kantor died from his accidents just right after 12 p.m. on Sunday June 13 at the age of 25. In addition to Kantor, 14 other men and women ended up injured in the incident.
Douglas Kantor’s uncle, Larry Lightner, expressed his disappointment about the teens’ launch.
“If I go to Texas, I can now be expecting to be shot? Is that the strategy? By a 15-calendar year-previous and he can go away and go do his research?” Lightner told KXAN’s Alex Caprariello in a Tuesday job interview. “… I’m not getting it that these other two children were being sitting down about eating ice cream…”
Garza mentioned he ideas to cost White, who investigators believe that fired most of the shots, with murder. The district attorney claimed a particular staff of investigators, dedicated to murder and other major crimes, will be functioning with APD for the duration of the investigation.
“What we are targeted on, what our obligation is, is to maintain the individual who dedicated murder, and who wounded 13 people today on our streets a couple of months back, accountable,” Garza said. “That is our target. And what we are executing appropriate now is guaranteeing that we have the greatest scenario feasible in purchase to do that.”
Chacon explained that all through an investigation of this magnitude, new data will come in each day, which frequently conflicts and supersedes past studies.
“The data commences coming in and that details always seems to change. And sometimes we will get details that proves to be incorrect,” Chacon said. “As the case progresses, we really sort of zeroed in on the correct man or woman, the person who basically pulled the result in and is accountable for the multiple shootings.”
The main said by means of analyzing ballistic proof, there is evidence White’s gun was connected to Kantor’s murder. It is also been linked to other violent crimes, which he states will also be investigated. Chacon stated all assets in this investigation will now be poured into tracking White down.
Even even now, Kantor thinks this will not carry his spouse and children justice. He wishes the other teens would also obtain a punishment for their crimes, in which evidence exists to verify their involvement.
“This was a prepared strike. This was the creating of an assassination. And my brother was caught in the crossfire. And these assassins were totally free to go,” Kantor mentioned. “I have no faith in what is likely on down there.”
